About The Position

Provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. The work is directed by specific instructions, precedents, and established policy. Problems are solved through the exercise of judgment in selecting the best course of action to be taken based on policies given. Errors are expected to be recognized promptly by the supervisor and corrected. The position is required to work under a limited supervision of the teacher and/or school administrator.

Requirements

Working knowledge of effective methods for assisting with children.
Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment is assigned.
Knowledge of the Rutherford County Schools organization.
Some knowledge of expected behavior of children based on the characteristics of the different ages and stages.
Skill of operating common office machines (as needed).
Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of all student and school information.
Ability to record and store data accurately.
Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.
Ability to solve minor problems independently.
Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward, and discipline.
Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension.
Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.
Must be 21 years of age with HS diploma or GED
Possess a valid Class A or B with a "P" and "S" endorsement
Meet vision and hearing requirements
Acceptable driving record
Must be insurable
Must pass background and pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

Gives group or individual instruction as prescribed by teacher
Monitors work assigned by teacher
Keeps students on task
Reinforces achievement of students
Reports student progress to teacher
Reports student behavior to supervisor/teacher/administration
Support of teacher when needed
Serve as proctor when needed
Scores students' papers as instructed by teacher
Distributes and collects instructional materials as needed
Checks and reports attendance if needed
Data collection of student behavior if needed
Files data/forms according to regulatory requirements
Conduct a thorough pre-trip (using the school's Daily Bus Inspection form) and post trip inspection of the school bus.
Keep exterior mirrors clean and adjusted at all times.
Perform a minimum of one school bus evacuation drills each school year utilizing appropriate emergency procedures per semester. (This must be documented in the checklist log)
Know, recognize, and obey road signs and signals by meanings, shapes, sounds, and colors.
Keep interior of the bus clean.
Maintain routes and schedules as planned by the local school board.
Report any hazards along the existing route to appropriate school officials.
Exercise the effective defensive driving skills of self-control, alertness, foresight and good judgment at all times while operating the school bus.
Maintain discipline on the school bus without jeopardizing safety while driving.
Complete all reports on bus discipline, bus maintenance and any other reports required by the school board.
Remain alert at all times to hazards, including but not limited to poor weather conditions, other vehicles, road conditions and trains at railroad crossings.
The driver shall not, at any time, permit students to stand in the step well or loading area or where the student could likely fall out of the bus, if the rear emergency door was opened, or where the driver's view is obscured.
At such time, as required by law and/or the school, the employee agrees to one mandatory drug test as part of the hiring process. In addition to the mandatory test, the employee agrees to random test(s) and post accident testing and to be tested if recommended by the driver's supervisor.
