About The Position

The Teacher Assistant at Swain County Schools is responsible for providing support to teachers in the instruction and management of students, particularly those with special needs. This role involves assisting with academic and behavioral challenges, ensuring the safety and well-being of students, and contributing to the overall educational experience by facilitating various classroom activities.

Requirements

• Associate degree or higher with an overall 2.5 or higher GPA from an accredited institution; OR 48 semester hours with an overall 2.5 or higher GPA; OR passing scores on College Entrance Exams Testing Score Report.
• Ability to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, and kneel repetitively.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students and colleagues.
• Ability to perform under stress and adapt to emergencies.
• Maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers in instruction and general supervision of students.
• Provide one-on-one assistance with academics and behavioral issues.
• Lead small group activities as needed.
• Monitor the safety and well-being of students constantly.
• Assist with the delivery of special services for students requiring functional life skills.
• Help with daily living skills, including medical procedures under supervision.
• Incorporate fine motor skills, sensory stimulation, and self-help skills into classroom activities.
• Perform general housekeeping duties related to classroom equipment and materials.
• Accept possible exposure to blood borne pathogens and wear personal protective equipment as required.
