About The Position

Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a community of high-performing public schools that utilizes a comprehensive approach to prepare students from preschool through high school for success in college and in life. We integrate academic rigor, community, family, and wellness to empower students to thrive in a culturally connected and changing world. Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has six campuses that serve approximately 3,500 students from TK through 12th grade. The Opportunity Under the supervision of School Leadership and a TK classroom teacher, the Teacher Assistant – Transition Kindergarten (TK) supports CNCA Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students by supporting instruction and performing supplemental activities which encourage students to meet their educational and development goals.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or a minimum of 48 semester units of college coursework (and/or have passed the CBEST)
  • Any combination equivalent to: two years of experience in Early Childhood Education or 12 units of course work in Early Childhood Education, and some experience with parent involvement.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with students
  • Demonstrated ability to positively work with students, staff & parents

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Children’s Center Permit or Child Development Permit desirable
  • Bilingual (oral & written) Spanish/English

Responsibilities

  • Serve as in-class support for TK and K students
  • In collaboration with the classroom teacher, assist in executing lesson plans for students
  • Assist the classroom teacher with co-planning and co-teaching for students
  • Assist students in learning academic and social skills such as the alphabet (pre-reading activities), counting, matching, patterns, use of materials, sitting still (circle time), sharing, getting along with others and taking turns
  • Regularly report on student progress, identifying strengths and needs to assist the team in making program modifications for students
  • Assume responsibility for small learning groups of students
  • Carry out tasks assigned by the teacher for students (including filing, paperwork, photocopying, working with small groups of students, and one-on-one tutoring)
  • Assist in maintenance of student records of attendance and achievement
  • Collaborate with other teachers to meet the needs of individual students
  • Integrate educational technology into the curricula and education program to strengthen the teaching/learning process for students
  • Support classroom teachers in developing long and short-term academic goals that scaffolds learning from students’ current performance levels to grade level
  • Support in creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Work closely with students and their families to promote personal growth and success
  • Assist TK students with the development of self-help skills such as toilet training (including diapering as needed), utilizing various learning aids such as toileting charts, behavior charts, etc
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with grade level team, administrators, and service providers as necessary
  • Supervise students during recess and lunch time
  • Other duties as assigned
