Teacher Assistants play a vital role in the educational team, supporting teachers and students to ensure a positive, productive learning environment. This position involves working alongside professional colleagues to enhance classroom instruction and provide individualized or small-group support for students, including English language learners and those with special needs.

  • Monitors and analyzes student attendance data to identify patterns and concerns.
  • Collaborates with students, families, and staff to address barriers to regular attendance.
  • Implements intervention plans to improve student engagement and attendance outcomes.
  • Promotes awareness of attendance expectations and compliance with district and state requirements.
  • Fosters positive relationships that encourage consistent school participation and academic success.
  • Possess or have the ability to acquire appropriate licensure in Illinois to serve as a paraprofessional
  • Paraprofessionals meet qualifications by possessing either of the following:
  • A Short-term Approval as a Paraprofessional (Reference this ISBE document for information)
  • A Paraprofessional Educator Endorsement (Reference this ISBE document for information)
  • A Substitute teacher license (Reference this ISBE document for information)
  • A Professional Educator License
  • Prior experience in an educational or child care setting is beneficial
  • Ability to work collaboratively and follow teacher instructions
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Commitment to maintaining professionalism, punctuality, and confidentiality
  • Willingness to complete required licensure and training, including Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, such as assisting with mobility needs when necessary
  • Highly organized and a self starter
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, and internet research
  • Degree in education, social work, counseling, or related field preferred
