About The Position

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University is a federally funded center with exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students and is tasked with developing and disseminating innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide while providing information, training, and technical assistance for parents and professionals to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from birth to age 21. Reporting to the Senior Instruction Support Coordinator, the Teacher Aide assists teachers in the team with various instructional activities, classroom and student management, and planning and development efforts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of three years of experience with educational services, classroom management, or a related field (Bachelor’s degree with one year of experience in the above-mentioned field will be considered).
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

  • Experience working in a K-12 setting.
  • Strong knowledge of educational strategies to utilize in developing literacy skills in deaf and hard of hearing children.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teachers with instruction of the students; prepares materials and tutors students individually and in small groups as instructed by the teacher; works closely with students individually and in small groups to reinforce the lessons presented by the teacher; aids students who have been absent; assists students with assigned activities and in following directions; and makes suggestions to teachers regarding student needs.
  • Assists teachers with classroom and student management; prepares the area for classroom activities; supervises teacher-planned activities; observes student behavior; assists in correcting minor problems; encourages students towards better working habits and behavior; and handles interruptions, as necessary.
  • Ensures the physical and emotional safety and supervision of all students; and assists with the supervision of students at all times.
  • Assists teachers with planning and developing activities; prepares illustrative and audio-visual materials; gathers materials and assists teachers with the preparation of developing instructional materials; assists teachers in making bulletin boards; and maintains teacher's workroom and/or other instructional areas.
  • Maintains high expectations of all students including students who are from traditionally underserved populations; and communications class and course expectations to students and families (i.e., course syllabus).
  • Provides instruction as guided by the teacher that reflects an understanding of cultural belonging and family needs.
  • Supports a program of instruction that is designed to meet the needs of individual students with appropriate accommodations for interests, disabilities, special talents, learning styles, and pace of learning.
  • Supports a learning environment that is conducive to student learning; and establishes a nurturing relationship with students.
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary approaches with the intent of teaching students appropriate behavior.
  • Participates in meetings including, but not limited to, SRTs, IEPs/IFSPs, Back to School Night and school-wide meetings (school-wide meetings may last until 4:30 p.m. and aides are expected to stay for the entire meeting).
  • Adheres to institutional policies, procedures, and Clerc Center expectations, including compliance with work hours; and completes all leave slips and other forms in accordance with guidelines.
  • Participates in Training and Professional Development activities.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with other team/department members, parents, and the community; and works collaboratively with educators from various units.
  • Supervises students during lunch, snack, recess periods, and hallway duty; and processes paperwork for team field trips.
  • Documents all national mission contacts and activities using the “Contact Log” and “Activity Summary” databases, according to established procedures and timelines.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.
  • Performs related and other duties as needed.
