About The Position

The Police Officer 1 at Walters State Community College is responsible for maintaining peace and enforcing laws on campus, ensuring a safe educational environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role involves performing patrols, responding to incidents, conducting investigations, and collaborating with local emergency response agencies. Officers may be required to work at various WSCC locations and must maintain their Tennessee P.O.S.T certification.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Current Tennessee P.O.S.T certification or left full-time Tennessee P.O.S.T certified employment within the last three years with good standing certification status.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and jurisdictional areas.
  • Knowledge of city, county, and state laws and court proceedings.
  • Ability to operate law-enforcement equipment and meet institutional requirements related to arrest authority and weapons use.
  • Basic knowledge of computer equipment and Microsoft Office applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree or higher in Criminal Justice Technology or related field.
  • At least two years of law enforcement experience.
  • Training in verbal de-escalation, crisis intervention, or crisis negotiation.
  • Instructor certification in areas such as Firearms, Defensive Tactics, or Taser.

Responsibilities

  • Perform foot and vehicle patrols of campus to preserve peace and enforce college rules and regulations.
  • Direct and manage vehicular traffic on campus.
  • Secure and unlock campus areas as needed.
  • Respond to calls for service and investigate incidents, including motor vehicle incidents and criminal offenses.
  • Monitor and review security camera recordings to assist in investigations.
  • Conduct investigations of crimes or incidents on campus, including questioning victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Develop leads and tips, search crime scenes, and analyze evidence.
  • Arrest offenders and prepare cases for court testimony.
  • Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors as needed.
  • Participate in emergency planning and management training.
  • Conduct safety equipment checks as assigned.
  • Maintain Tennessee P.O.S.T certification by attending necessary training.
  • Prepare and maintain various reports and records as required.
