The Tax Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating tax compliance, planning, and consulting engagements while ensuring high-quality client service and adherence to federal, state, and local tax regulations. This role serves as a key technical and people leader within the Tax Department, overseeing engagements from planning through delivery, reviewing complex work, mentoring staff, and acting as a primary liaison between clients, senior leadership, and engagement teams. The Tax Supervisor balances hands-on technical work with oversight responsibilities, ensuring projects are completed accurately, timely, and in alignment with firm standards and client expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA license required or in active pursuit (preferred if not currently licensed).
  • 5+ years of progressive tax experience within a public accounting firm, including experience supervising or reviewing the work of others.
  • Demonstrated experience with tax compliance, planning, and client advisory services.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Strong proficiency with tax preparation and engagement software, including UltraTax, CCH Engagement, and Thomson Reuters products.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to coach, mentor, and motivate team members.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex tax concepts into practical guidance.
  • High level of professionalism, sound judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Client-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional service.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts. This may include preparation of more complex engagements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of tax engagements in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and firm standards.
  • Identify and evaluate tax-saving opportunities while mitigating risk and ensuring compliance.
  • Provide advanced tax planning, consulting, and advisory services tailored to client needs.
  • Advise clients on tax implications related to business formations, acquisitions, restructuring, succession planning, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Conduct and review complex tax research and provide well-supported conclusions and recommendations.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage multiple tax engagements simultaneously.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients, proactively addressing tax issues and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Communicate complex tax matters clearly and professionally to clients, ensuring understanding and confidence in recommendations.
  • Monitor engagement budgets, deadlines, and deliverables to ensure efficiency and profitability.
  • Collaborate with Partners, Managers, and other departments to deliver integrated client solutions.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Senior Accountants, Staff Accountants, and interns.
  • Review work prepared by team members and provide timely, constructive feedback to support accuracy and professional growth.
  • Assist with training, onboarding, and performance development of tax staff.
  • Promote accountability, quality control, and continuous improvement within the Tax Department.
  • Act as a technical resource and escalation point for complex tax issues.
