About The Position

The Sales/Use Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s U.S. state and local indirect tax compliance, audits, and planning, with a focus on sales and use taxes. This role will ensure accurate and timely filing, support business operations in navigating complex tax requirements, and lead digital transformation and process improvement initiatives within the indirect tax function. The position reports to the Tax Director, North America.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in sales/use tax compliance and audit defense, preferably in a multi-state environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. state and local sales/use tax laws.
  • Experience with sales tax automation software and ERP tax integration.
  • Demonstrated success in leading process improvement or automation initiatives
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with a collaborative mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CMI (Sales Tax) designation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee preparation, review, and timely filing of U.S. state and local sales and use tax returns, including related reconciliations.
  • Manage compliance with Canadian GST/HST and QST, including return preparation, filing, and audit support.
  • Manage sales/use tax and Canadian indirect tax audits, inquiries, and other communications with tax authorities.
  • Maintain and update tax rates, product taxability matrices, and exemption certificate management systems.
  • Implement and optimize sales tax automation solutions (Vertex, Avalara, Alteryx) to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Identify opportunities for process standardization, automation, and enhanced use of data analytics to strengthen compliance and reporting.
  • Establish and maintain effective tax control mechanisms to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Advise business units on the sales/use tax implications of transactions, contracts, and system changes.
  • Partner with IT, finance, and sales teams to ensure accurate tax determination and reporting within ERP and billing systems.
  • Stay informed on U.S.-relevant state and local tax law changes and communicate implications clearly to stakeholders.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and vendors.
  • Provide clear and constructive guidance and training on sales/use tax to internal stakeholders.
