About The Position

The Tax Controversy Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of tax disputes and audits with federal, state, and local taxing authorities. This role requires strong technical tax knowledge, strategic thinking, and the ability to represent the company or clients in examinations, appeals, and negotiations to ensure compliance and minimize tax exposure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or Law (JD or LLM preferred).
  • CPA, JD, or Enrolled Agent designation strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in tax controversy, audit defense, or related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state tax procedures, audit processes, and appeals.
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Excellent negotiation and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Experience working with law firms, accounting firms, or corporate tax departments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing multiple controversies simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with IRS administrative practices and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in tax research software (e.g., CCH, RIA Checkpoint, LexisNexis).
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the organization (or clients) before the IRS and state tax authorities during audits, appeals, and other examinations.
  • Research and analyze complex tax issues to develop defensible positions and strategies.
  • Prepare written responses to audit inquiries, notices, and requests for information.
  • Coordinate and manage all documentation related to tax controversies, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
  • Collaborate with internal finance, accounting, and legal teams to assess potential tax risks and exposures.
  • Draft protest letters, position papers, and settlement proposals.
  • Monitor developments in tax law, regulations, and court decisions that could impact current or future cases.
  • Advise leadership on tax controversy trends, risk mitigation, and compliance best practices.
  • Build and maintain relationships with taxing authority representatives to facilitate resolution.
  • Support overall tax compliance and planning initiatives as needed.
