About The Position

The Tax Compliance Agent 1 (NY HELPS) position is responsible for enforcing compliance with New York State tax laws and regulations, particularly in the collection of child support, spousal arrears, and taxes. The role involves conducting fieldwork to locate delinquent respondents, assessing their financial ability to pay, and maintaining effective communication with various stakeholders. This position may be filled as a one-year traineeship, with the potential for permanent appointment based on performance and qualifications.

Requirements

• Three years of full-time experience dealing with the general public or in debt collection.
• 30 semester credit hours of college-level study and two years of relevant experience.
• 60 semester credit hours of college-level study and one year of relevant experience.
• Reachable on the eligible list for this title and location under Civil Service Law.

Responsibilities

• Enforce compliance based on research of NYS Tax Law and related regulations.
• Identify sources of investigative information to locate delinquent respondents.
• Conduct fieldwork to locate assets and conduct redemptions, including overnight and weekend travel.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, department personnel, and respondents.
• Maintain a calm, courteous, and professional demeanor when interacting with respondents.
• Prepare reports detailing time and attendance, productivity, and collection case activities using PC applications.
• Stay updated on Department procedures regarding tax warrants, levies, and asset seizure.
• Research public records for respondent information.
• Comply with HR management, affirmative action, and internal control policies.
