Do you want to assist Vermonters with work that impacts virtually every person in our state?  This position will work closely with Vermont Department of Taxes staff, taxpayers, and many other state agencies and towns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and one (1) or more years of work in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field   OR   High School diploma or equivalent or higher and at least four (4) years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field   OR   One (1) year or more as a Tax Analyst II or Tax Examiner III
  • Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Nice To Haves

  • Extension tax knowledge
  • Experience in business or fiscal duties.
  • Knowledge of local government.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.
  • Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Enrolled Agent (EA)
  • Degree or coursework in accounting, economics, business administration, public administration, finance, math, or related field

Responsibilities

  • Providing support to taxpayers through both phone, emails and in person.
  • Reviewing returns for accuracy and correcting mistakes or requesting information.
  • Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure deadlines are met.
