The Sign Language Interpreter provides interpreting services for all clinical and professional University of Rochester Medical Center Staff, patients, and caregivers. These services are provided for SMH inpatient, HH inpatient, URMC ambulatory and affiliates within the interpreter services radius. The TAR interpreter has on-call and weekend/evening responsibilities.

  • Interprets in healthcare setting: Autonomously interprets individual, multidisciplinary, and group encounters.
  • Manages flow of communication throughout the healthcare encounter.
  • Prepares for interpreting encounter and seeks clarification as needed.
  • Maintains transparency throughout the entirety of clinical encounter.
  • Promotes patient autonomy and maintains impartiality.
  • Works collaboratively with team interpreter when indicated.
  • Responds to pages and interpreting requests outside of office hours.
  • Triages and prioritizes interpreting requests.
  • Communicates and coordinates with care team to provide optimal services.
  • Conducts patient rounds as necessary.
  • Mediates cultural nuance and facilitates building of rapport between patient and provider.
  • Provides ad-hoc education to URMC staff regarding best practices for working with interpreters.
  • Directs patients to appropriate hospital resources.
  • Collaborates as a member of clinical and non-clinical teams.
  • Confirms context and goals of encounter with each party.
  • Engages in open dialogue with leadership and scheduling team.
  • Participates in continuing education and maintains certification.
  • Completes scheduled trainings and attends required staff meetings.
  • Completes administrative duties in a timely manner.
  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
  • 2 years healthcare interpreting experience Strongly Preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience Required.
  • Must be fluent in English and ASL.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests and procedures in working languages.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting.
