About The Position

As a member of the Research, Evaluation, and Digital Information Services team (READS), the Tactile Graphic Artist – Monarch Projects will create and remediate tactile graphics for use with the Monarch multiline braille device by any Monarch user preparing for, seeking, or maintaining Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE). The position will upload graphics files to the Tactile Graphic Image Library (TGIL) using the NetX Digital Asset Management system and work collaboratively with other team members to support the maintenance and improvement of the TGIL website and Monarch app. This is a temporary, grant-funded position with the potential to transition to a permanent role upon the conclusion of grant activities, contingent upon continued funding and satisfactory performance. The expected duration of employment is through September 30, 2028. However, employment is dependent on the continued availability of grant funds and may be terminated at any time if funding is reduced or discontinued.

Requirements

  • Special Requirement: Must be able to submit three samples of original tactile graphic designs or work upon request.
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design preferred; bachelor’s degree in a related field acceptable with verifiable graphic design experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience creating tactile graphics for individuals who are blind or low vision, including a working knowledge of UEB and Nemeth.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and effectively communicate differences between visual and tactual perception.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills to improve graphics based on data and user feedback.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related collaboration tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, SharePoint, Teams, Zoom, internet browsers); experience with screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA) preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Create, review, and remediate tactile graphics in accordance with Monarch best practices and BANA guidelines to support Monarch users and Monarch RISE Project participants preparing for, seeking, or maintaining CIE.
  • Upload, catalog, and maintain tactile graphics and related records in the Tactile Graphic Image Library (TGIL) using the NetX Digital Asset Management platform.
  • Evaluate donated or existing employment-related graphics for potential remediation, enhancement, or inclusion in TGIL, exercising independent judgment and providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Manage the TGIL graphics request and remediation workflow, prioritizing and accepting Monarch RISE Project requests in alignment with established request policies.
  • Provide expert support to TGIL users by responding to inquiries, resolving technical issues, and offering guidance on appropriate graphics use.
  • Collaborate closely with READS department staff and others to identify, plan, and implement improvements to TGIL systems, the website, and the Monarch TGIL app, including roadmap development and feedback to developers.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Monarch tactile graphics best practices and remain current on advancements in braille, tactile graphics, project management, and process improvement.
