About The Position

BAE Systems has supported the Strategic Systems Program (SSP) continually since the program’s inception in the 1950s. SSP developed the first sea-based, underwater-launched Strategic Weapon System (SWS), a defense system that is truly critical to our national security. For more than six decades, SSP has maintained and upgraded this weapon system and we have been there every step of the way. The sea-based SWS is the ultimate stealthy weapon system and as the first leg of the U.S. nuclear triad. With over 70% of our nation’s nuclear arsenal its importance to maintaining world peace cannot be overstated. The development of the COLUMBIA platform, the most advanced nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed submarine ever designed, as well the next D5LE2 weapon system is under way and will begin to be rolled out over the next decade. The Navy projects this system to be operational through 2084, meaning the program will have a total life span of more than 120 years. This is a truly unique program and BAE Systems employees on this program understand they are part of an important legacy. We have an exciting opportunity with an immediate need for a Systems Safety Engineer position with extensive background in safety and the evaluation of multidiscipline technical programs, collaborating across multiple design and customer entities. This key role is for our Systems Integration and Engineering Support Services contract, supporting the D5 TRIDENT Strategic Weapon System for the Strategic Systems Program (SSP) Office Safety Programs. There is no relocation assistance available, if relocation is required the selected candidate must be willing to relocate at his/he own expense. The successful candidate will be adept at understanding system level safety engineering philosophies and schedules and have the ability to plan and direct the technical execution of weapon system safety functions. The successful candidate will be able to synthesize information for alternative safety strategies for current and future systems, and work with a section of engineers and technicians to formulate and implement safety strategies. The successful candidate will be adept at preparing for, and presenting at design reviews, performing and understanding the associated system level design safety requirements. The candidate will also be comfortable performing risk assessment and have the judgement to know when to elevate risks.
