About The Position

The Systems Operator I position at Monterey Bay Aquarium is responsible for the operation, quality control, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of the aquarium's seawater system and associated mechanical and HVAC systems. This role is crucial for maintaining animal life support and environmental systems, ensuring optimal water quality and system performance. The position operates on a night shift schedule from Wednesday to Saturday, 8:30 PM to 6:30 AM.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aquarium Science, Engineering, or related field, or advanced certifications in facilities engineering or automated controls, or equivalent experience in water treatment plant operations or aquariums.
  • Understanding of mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration as it applies to aquarium systems.
  • Knowledge of automated controls, pneumatics, and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills on mechanical/electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience in plumbing and electrical design, assembly, and maintenance.
  • Experience working with HVAC systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety guidelines and industrial equipment operation/maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair critical water and facility systems, including life support equipment, chillers, boilers, filtration systems, and HVAC systems.
  • Analyze data from control systems and laboratory to assess water quality and system performance.
  • Implement engineering decisions based on data analysis and collaborate with other departments.
  • Monitor real-time water quality and respond to alarms or out-of-range trends.
  • Recommend solutions for changes to life support systems based on various analyses and observations.
  • Perform routine maintenance on critical water and mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Adjust or override automatic controls to optimize equipment parameters.
