About The Position

The Systems Engineer (Flight Test Director) at Sandia National Laboratories is responsible for planning, executing, supervising, and providing leadership for operations at the Tonopah Test Range. This role involves coordinating a diverse team of technologists and professionals to ensure successful flight tests that meet customer requirements. The position requires strong leadership, analytical skills, and a comprehensive understanding of project management, flight safety, and test operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant area of study (e.g., Electro-Mechanical, Computer Science, Operations Management, or another applicable discipline).
  • 10 years of demonstrated expertise in military air-to-ground operations, preferably in fighter/attack, bomber, or tactical airlift and flight operations.
  • 5 years of relevant experience in multi-agency coordination and flight safety.
  • Detailed knowledge of operations center integration and supervision of real-time heavy aircraft and tactical aircraft flight operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field.
  • Highly experienced in UAV/RPA operations and command and control environments.
  • Basic understanding of Air Force Range Procedures, notably the Nellis Range Supplement to AFI 13-212.
  • Previous Test Conductor/Director and/or Range Control Officer/Forward Air Controller qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Document and track component and system-level performance requirements and develop acceptance criteria for the subsystems and system.
  • Document and track project risks and interface with stakeholders to develop mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Evaluate competing characteristics between system elements and determine the most effective, integrated system solution.
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a diverse group of personnel comprising the mission operations and mission support teams.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to ensure that expectations are met.
  • Develop logistical and deployment plans and prepare required training resources.
  • Maintain a fundamental understanding of range data collection instruments and their integration.
  • Work in a high-stress environment with competing priorities to meet tight deadlines.
  • Develop and deliver a variety of presentations, proposals, and reports.
