About The Position

Nevados is developing a suite of control system devices and software products that enable the reliable operation of our trackers. As part of the Controls team, the Systems Electrical Engineer will be responsible for end-to-end development of new control system devices, integration of those devices in the overall system, and ongoing development and improvements, manufacturing, and technical support for existing devices. While Nevados is a remote-first company with employees located across the US and Canada, the Controls team is required to work at least 50% of the time at the Nevados headquarters in Oakland.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on relevant experience.
  • Strong control theory, sensor fusion, and safety/fault management.
  • Data analysis experience with time-series telemetry (SQL or equivalent; Python/JavaScript; dashboards;).
  • Outdoor/Industrial products: ingress protection, thermal design, lightning/ESD, surge protection, reliability testing.
  • Familiar with industrial comms and protocols (CAN, RS485/Modbus).
  • Proven field support and root-cause analysis skills, including structured problem solving and clear documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • HIL/SIL tooling, motor dynos, oscilloscopes, power analyzers.
  • Standards/compliance: UL/IEC, functional safety concepts, EMC testing.
  • Embedded development background; comfortable reading/modifying C/C++ firmware and interpreting low-level signals.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and validate motor control for tracker actuation, including torque/speed/position loops and fault handling.
  • Develop, review, and iterate power electronics and lowpower designs for outdoor, ruggedized environments.
  • Specify, integrate, and validate battery systems and BMS.
  • Work with firmware team to embedded diagnostics and telemetry to enable remote monitoring, root-cause analysis, and predictive maintenance.
  • Analyze fleet telemetry to quantify performance, identify anomalies, and drive corrective actions.
  • Collaborate on tracker control algorithms and system safety interlocks.
  • Define test plans; execute HIL/SIL, bench and field validation; perform FMEA; close the loop with firmware/hardware changes.
  • Work across teams to ship robust designs and scalable updates.
  • Author specifications, schematics, test reports, design reviews, and field investigation summaries.
