About The Position

Big Sky Resort is seeking a highly skilled, service‑oriented, and detail‑driven Systems Administrator to support, maintain, and enhance the core systems that enable daily operations across resort departments. This role plays a critical part in ensuring system reliability, server performance, application stability, and proper security controls are in place for all on‑premises and cloud-based infrastructure. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving while working in a fast-paced mountain environment.

Requirements

  • Require a minimum of High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires 4 years of related work experience or 2 years of experience in Big Sky IT.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft 365 administration, server management, and troubleshooting systems.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and occasional power tools is required.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for company insurance purposes.
  • Ability to ski or ride to on‑mountain locations as required for system checks, equipment maintenance, or emergency response.
  • Advanced understanding of enterprise Windows Server and Linux administration, virtualization technologies, and system security best practices.
  • Strong diagnostic capabilities using structured reasoning, vendor resources, documentation, and log analysis tools to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure components including DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, LAN/WAN interactions, VPNs, authentication, and cloud‑connected systems.
  • Experience working with monitoring platforms and performance‑analysis utilities to ensure system health and rapid response to anomalies.
  • Ability to write, interpret, and maintain automation scripts for process improvement and system standardization.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and business departments, including the ability to explain complex issues in clear, understandable terms.
  • Understands the unique needs of a resort environment, including POS systems, RFID ticketing, snowmaking systems, and outdoor infrastructure challenges.
  • Strong organizational skills, documentation discipline, and the ability to manage several ongoing projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop and execute a plan based on high-level goals; Organized and self-motivated.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver high quality work output.
  • Ability to set priorities and adapt to changes in a quick, professional manner.
  • Willingness to make informed decisions, present clear reasoning, and follow established procedures while also recommending improvements when appropriate.

  • Weekend, afterhours, and holiday work may be required to support 24/7 resort operations, system emergencies, and seasonal demands.
  • May be required to carry a cellular phone and participate in an on‑call rotation for system‑level incident response.
  • Working environment can include dirty, dusty, damp, dark, hot and cold conditions.
  • Appropriate safety equipment and training will be provided for hazardous environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs, 40lbs assisted.
  • Ability to use common technician hand tools.
  • Ability to work in areas without handicap access.
  • Ability to work on a ladder.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with public, customers and employees.
  • Ability to read manuals, documentation and computer screens.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer B.S. in Computer Science or related field.
  • Certifications preferred: CompTIA Server+, Security+, Microsoft Azure/AzureAD, VMware VCP, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain Windows Server and Linux environments including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, file/print services, and identity/permission structures.
  • Oversee enterprise virtualization platforms, including provisioning VMs, managing snapshots, resource allocation, host maintenance, and performance optimization.
  • Manage enterprise backup systems, disaster recovery plans, and data retention procedures, ensuring system and data resilience for all business‑critical applications.
  • Provide advanced support for system‑level incidents escalated from IT Operations staff, including root-cause analysis, remediation recommendations, and long-term prevention strategies.
  • Maintain core resort applications such as POS platforms, access control systems, lodging/back‑office applications, communication systems, and RFID infrastructure, ensuring uptime and compatibility across systems.
  • Perform routine and emergency system patching, updates, firmware upgrades, and configuration changes following IT change‑management procedures.
  • Collaborate with Networking, Operations, and Business Systems teams to troubleshoot complex cross‑platform issues involving connectivity, authentication, application performance, or hardware failure.
  • Monitor system logs, and infrastructure performance dashboards to proactively identify issues and implement corrective action.
  • Participate in seasonal readiness projects including winter lift‑access systems, POS Systems, digital signage systems, event infrastructure, and other operational system testing.
  • Assist with vendor engagement, support contracts, warranty processes, and escalation for hardware and software platforms under the Systems team’s responsibility.
  • Respond to and resolve technical support requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform assigned tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Contribute to the design process, identify potential caveats, and propose ideas that will improve the overall systems environment.
  • Maintain and help to improve cybersecurity awareness and consider company posture implications of system configurations.
  • Maintain compliance with written Boyne IT policies/standards/processes/work instructions.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned by the IT Director.
