About The Position

The Systems Administrator I position at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin provides technical support for the High-Resolution X-ray Computed Tomography Facility. This role involves managing and maintaining servers, workstations, web/cloud resources, networking, and backups. The position is available as part-time (20 hours per week) or full-time (40 hours per week) and is expected to continue indefinitely. The earliest start date is immediate, and the position is located at the UT Main Campus.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of system administration with two or more years of professional experience with MS Windows installation and administration.
  • Knowledge and experience installing and maintaining web servers and associated software (Apache).
  • Familiarity with RAID, hardware diagnostics, backups, and failure-recovery procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience managing LANs and familiarity with graphics- and memory-intensive computing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated expertise in enterprise client system administration and application deployment solutions (e.g. Active Directory, MS GPO, SCCM).
  • Experience administering Mac OSX and Linux operating systems.
  • Programming experience in shell scripting, Bash, Windows, PowerShell, Perl, Python, C/C++, IDL, Java, PHP, HTML.
  • Understanding of database systems, SQL, and JBoss.
  • Familiarity with technical software used by lab operations (IDL, Avizo, VG Studio Max, ImageJ).
  • Experience working with or around X-ray scanning equipment and/or in a scientific lab environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain servers, including planning, setup, and maintenance of CT lab’s onsite Windows Servers and connections to Campus Active Directory.
  • Manage and maintain workstations, including hardware and software maintenance of IP lab, conference room, Digital Methods Classroom, staff desktops, and laptops.
  • Setup and maintain projection systems, video conference equipment, lab printers, document scanners, and digital camera equipment.
  • Manage and maintain web/cloud resources, including setup and maintenance of UT Datacenter Virtual machines and cloud-based bulk storage.
  • Design, setup, and maintain network infrastructure, including security controls, running cables, switches, routers, and IP address allocation.
  • Assist in the maintenance of X-ray equipment (full-time only), including hardware and software maintenance of data acquisition and reconstruction systems.
  • Manage and maintain backups and archiving, including local Rapid-Recovery backup system and offsite data backups.
