The System Technician role is responsible for highly skilled start-up testing and maintenance activities related to substation and system protection equipment.

Requirements

  • 2 years formal education in electrical and electronic theory and fundamentals equivalent to completion of the Cleveland Institute of Electronics (CIE) Course 1B
  • 6 years technical experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic plant and/or substation electrical equipment.
  • Related training through an accredited electrical apprenticeship program may be substituted for the 2 years formal education, as determined by the JATC.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Basic knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), and Alliant Service Standards.
  • Knowledge of electric utility systems operation, maintenance and construction practices.
  • Demonstrated mechanical ability.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to work alone in unsupervised situations.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including DOS, Windows, Excel, Access and Word.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Must report to work fit for duty and free from the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, commissions, maintains and tests substation and power plant protective relays, digital and analog telemetering, power-line carrier transmitters/receivers, wave-traps and carrier tuning equipment, transfer trip carrier and tone equipment, substation inner-panel fiber optic and metallic cable, transducers, digital fault recorders, sequence of events recorders, substation local area networks (LANs), substation PLCs and CPUs, remote terminal units for both substation use and distribution automation motor operator control, substation communications circuits from the Demarc to all internal equipment, packet radio and 928/952 MHz radio.
  • Commissions, maintains and tests current transformers, coupling capacitors, fiber optic cable to high voltage equipment and substation control cable in transmission and distribution substations.
  • Prepares and maintains records of equipment tests and maintenance, keeps operating records, prepares purchase authorizations and performs other administrative work as required.
  • Makes special tests as directed in connection with operation, maintenance and design of all types of electrical equipment and systems associated with substations and system protection.
  • Installs, commissions, maintains and tests like types of customer equipment on non-commodity projects.
  • Trains fellow employees in related activities.
  • May be required to perform communication's equipment problems.
  • Performs other similar, related or incidental duties.
  • Must be willing to work long overtime hours to maintain continuity of service, as emergencies require.
