About The Position

Our client base spans diverse markets such as automotive, mining, defense, insurance, and aerospace. Edge Case is founded by the recognized world leaders in autonomous system safety and autonomous vehicle safety. Our experts are writing the standards and developing the products that will bring innovation safely into society. Edge Case is expanding our System Safety Engineer (SSE) Team. We are currently looking for engineers with experience in the field of vehicle system safety. SSEs will report to a System Safety Engineering Branch Lead and will work closely with the leadership team to ensure our clients’ needs are met. Requirements

  • Authorization to work in the United States is a precondition of employment. ECR will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Experience implementing MIL-STD 882E, JSSSEH/JS-SSA Implementation Guide (Software Safety Level of Rigor (LoR)), AOP 52, ARP-4761/DO-178, ISO 26262, ISO 21448, ISO 8800, or other system safety practices on complex, software-intensive systems.
  • Experience executing safety analysis techniques such as Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Functional Safety Concept, Technical Safety Concept, etc.
  • Experience generating safety documents such as System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), safety cases, Safety Assessment Reports (SAR), safety case assessments, and Safety Management System (SMS) assessments.
  • Experience/expertise with safety requirements, safety architecture at the system level, as well as safety design in hardware and software, mitigation strategy, and verification and validation assessment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curious and motivated to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to adapt to different, changing programming languages and technologies.
  • 4 to 10 years of system safety engineering experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher in Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field.
  • Experience developing software or control systems for commercial and/or DoD platform or weapon systems.
  • Experience in autonomous system safety / behavioral safety / Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Safety.
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Functional Safety Expert or Certified Functional Safety Professional certificate.
  • Experience in evaluating and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with Agile planning methods.
  • MBSE (Cameo) experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support/lead complex safety engineering efforts which contribute to overarching customer systems engineering efforts.
  • Utilize AI-enabled platforms to support safety assessments, automate routine analyses, and drive data-informed safety engineering decisions.
  • Support/lead customer discussions to identify, plan, and document appropriate safety engineering strategies.
  • Support/lead refinement of Concept of Operations, identification of potential safety mishaps and hazards, and identification of safety concepts and goals.
  • Perform detailed safety/hazard analysis to identify failure consequences and related design and procedural mitigations.
  • Define system and subsystem safety requirements and procedures.
  • Identify safety tasks needed during requirements, design, implementation, and verification phases of safety critical item development for both hardware and software.
  • Track the status of mishaps, hazards, mitigations/controls, and verification.
  • Support/lead working groups and design reviews to help ensure that safety goals and requirements are being effectively addressed.
  • Document and summarize safety engineering status based on event scope, system configuration, and system safety task status.
  • Support/manage tasking and review work produced by supporting team members.
  • Perform system safety engineering work in traditional spreadsheets, specialized tools, and Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) tools (Cameo).
