As a System Hardware Reliability Engineer, you will be a critical owner in ensuring the robustness and longevity of Google's storage, server, and machine learning hardware. From the earliest design phases, you'll proactively analyze system configurations and collaborate closely with architects for selection of resilient components and optimal designs. You will advise the creation and execution of comprehensive reliability plans, strategically allocating resources and overseeing testing to validate that our products consistently meet demanding reliability targets. Beyond initial development, you will establish and drive ongoing reliability programs at our contract manufacturing partners across the Americas and Europe, embedding a culture of quality and proactively identifying potential failure points. Your will be vital in resolving field excursions, managing reliability requirements at partner sites (including evaluations and test implementation), and providing insightful statistical analysis to predict field performance and inform critical decisions. You will be the linchpin connecting product development, manufacturing excellence, and flawless field operation, directly contributing to the dependable foundation of Google's infrastructure. Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

  • Drive the execution of reliability plans, including testing, data analysis, and risk assessment throughout the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase.
  • Track system reliability metrics, proactively identify and address unwanted behavior, and develop mitigation strategies to maintain optimal performance.
  • Utilize field reliability data and investigative skills to conduct thorough failure analysis, identify root causes, and generate actionable insights for continuous improvement.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in Cloud quality and reliability engineering, computing or network infrastructure hardware, or relevant experience.
  • Experience in Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), derating analysis, test plans, Ongoing Reliability Test (ORT), reliability block diagrams, and other system level reliability analysis tools.
  • Master's or PhD in Reliability/Electrical/Industrial/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with system level reliability tools such as Reliability Block Diagrams (RBDs), Mean Cumulative Function (MCF), Homogeneous and Non-Homogeneous Poisson Processes (HPP, NHPP), and simulation tools.
  • Experience with failure analysis and fault isolation techniques and how to apply them to find root causes of failure.
  • Experience leading cross-functional, problem-solving teams using practical approaches.
