WSP is currently initiating a search for a System Engineer IV for our Hawthorne NY office. System Engineer IV serves in a senior technical and supervisory role, providing advanced IT design and support for Transportation Management Center (TMC) operations and overseeing system technicians. This position works closely with the TMC Manager and the NYSDOT ITS Coordinator to support the full lifecycle of the TMC's field and central hardware and software systems, including installation, operation, repair, relocation, and maintenance. The HVTMC is a 24/7/365 operation that might require you to work outside the normal 9-5 hours.

  • Electrical & Communications Systems
  • AC/DC electrical systems.

  • Traffic signal controllers
  • ITS field controllers for surveillance and ramp metering.
  • Detection technologies (video, radar, acoustic, loops, etc.).
  • Traffic signal systems and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) or equivalent.
  • Traffic cameras, automated incident detection systems (AID), and digital message displays
  • Microsoft SQL Server database administration and reporting.
  • Microsoft Excel and Access for data analysis and management.
  • Ability to read and interpret system design and record drawings.
  • System monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem resolution in mission-critical environments.
  • Personnel management, including mentoring and training technical staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to work effectively with NYSDOT, WSP, and other stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, Computer Science, Information Sciences, or a closely related field as applicable
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in system design, development, and/or system/database administration.
  • Knowledge of systems networking and IT infrastructure management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Demonstrated personnel management experience, including mentoring and training new staff.
  • Ability to respond effectively to problem situations and make sound technical decisions under pressure.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to field locations as required.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Master's degree in engineering, Computer Science, Information Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Standard IT networking certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, Network+ or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of Connected Vehicle technologies (V2X, V2V, and V2I).
  • Experience developing conceptual ITS and communication system designs through construction, integration, and testing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address design and implementation challenges, including during the construction phase.
  • Experience with research and development of advanced ITS technologies, including; design, development, testing, and evaluation.
  • Experience in documenting research and development activities, including project plans and specifications.
  • Ability to bring forward emerging technologies and identify opportunities for innovation and grant offerings.
  • Experience developing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to ensure accurate and competitive vendor bids.
  • Ability to draft and review Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) specifications for new projects and system enhancements.
  • Comprehensive understanding of ITS architecture and interrelationships between central systems, field devices, and communications infrastructure.
  • Experience coordinating the flow of information between ITS installation/maintenance contracts and TMC operations staff.
