The Medical Director of Emergency Medicine will work with WVU Health System (WVUHS) hospitals and associated entities to provide high quality and high value Emergency Medicine services. Serves as a bridge between WVUHS quality efforts and system-wide improvement initiatives with various emergency medicine programs with regard to efficiency, quality, throughput, and staffing efforts. Collaborate with appropriate leadership, clinical, operational, and financial staffs to achieve WVUHS and Emergency Medicine performance goals. The Medical Director of Emergency Medicine will further develop the positive, mutually supportive relationships between the West Virginia University Health System and its constituents, and other potential business partners not presently identified. This position will work closely with both administrative staff and members of the professional staff and its leadership to maintain the high quality of the staff and to help their participation in furthering the mission of the organization. Under the direction of the WVUHS Medical Group President and CEO and the WVUHS CMO, the Medical Director Emergency Medicine will be a spokesperson for WVU Medicine and, when appropriate, the WVU Health Sciences Center in discussions and institutional planning events as they apply to professional staff relations and management services.

  • Provides development, management and leadership skills to the Emergency Medicine services in partnership with regional leadership contracting for emergency medicine services.
  • Practices or provides direct administrative oversight of high-quality clinical emergency medicine care.
  • Provides input to Human Resources (HR) office and institutional leaders on best practices for recruitment, retention, and onboarding of physicians and associate medical staff.
  • Works to understand and optimize workplace satisfaction.
  • Maintains regular interactions with the professional staff and other stakeholders to enhance relationships and integration.
  • Supports the growth and development of WVUHS Emergency Medicine service contracts in primary, secondary, and tertiary markets.
  • Helps develop, implement, and execute policies and procedures relating to emergency medicine services.
  • Participates in the development of emergency medicine service business plans, proforma analyses, and other exercises related to financial accountability.
  • Engages in the oversight of emergency medicine locums and staffing agency contracts and relationships.
  • Engages in performance improvement processes within the WVUHS and with other entities as contracted.
  • Ensures compliance with local policies, bylaws, rules and regulations, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains an awareness of regulations, policies, procedures, and standards for third party payers.
  • Actively participates in the marketing of the WVU Medicine Emergency Medicine Services.
  • Medical Degree and Board Certification in Emergency Medicine.
  • Active medical licensure through the West Virginia Board of Medicine or Board of Osteopathic Medicine and other states as appropriate for work assignments.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Minimum of three years of management experience.
  • Minimum of three years of emergency medicine experience.
  • Minimum of five years of emergency medicine experience in a hospital with at least 100 staffed beds.
  • Experience with recruitment, assessing emergency medicine service staffing models, and quality improvement.
