We are seeking a System Administrator to perform various activities to support the success of the team in providing quality IT services to NICHD. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) was established as a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1962. The NICHD mission is to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. Components of the NICHD have differing environments and needs. Operating environments include UNIX, Linux, Windows, and MAC. Similarly, software for system operation, management, and application support varies among divisions.

  • Analyzing and figuring out the system needs of an organization.
  • Installing hardware and software for the network.
  • Keeping systems operating efficiently by performing any necessary upgrades and repairs.
  • Planning a strategy to maintain system security on the computers and the network as a whole.
  • Optimizing and evaluating the system regularly.
  • Assigning and updating security permissions for the system network.
  • Training or directing users on the correct use of software and hardware within the system.
  • Performing problem-solving tasks when alerted by a user or monitoring system.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience related to design, development, and integration of hardware and software to support environments with virtualization including RedHat, CentOS, and SPARC Solaris.
  • Ten (10) or more years hands on experience performing a variety of engineering and operational related assignments associated with SAN, NAS and Storage operations, backup operations, and virtualization software.
  • Hands on experience writing scripts with a scripting language.
  • Five (5) or more years' experience in AWS and AZURE, and other Cloud environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Experience with various server operating systems and network configuration. Seven (7) years of applicable experience may be substituted for degree requirements.
  • Prefers Unix Engineer with experience having frequent interchanges with the customer to determine customer needs and ensure those needs are met.
  • Prefer five (5) or more years' experience or more in desktop, server, network, and security support including installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and administering Windows 2003/2008/2012 servers, Virtual servers, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
  • Prefer five (5) or more years of configuration and management of shared storage technologies such as ISCSI, Storage Area Networks (SAN), and Network Attached Storage.
  • Prefer three (3) or more years' experience in configuration and management of WINS, DNS, DHCP, Microsoft IIS, SharePoint 2010, SharePoint 2013, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Configuration and management of switches, routers, load balancers and other networking devices.
  • Knowledge of EqualLogic network devices is a plus.
  • Experience in designing backup policies and procedures, performance of backups and recovery solutions and maintenance is a plus.
  • Prefer prior experience with performance monitoring and providing documentation of issues and recommendations to Service Delivery.
  • Prefer strong knowledge of Cloud technologies including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation to operate and maintain the equipment and/or software.
  • Prefer strong skills in the following key areas including strategic thinking, multi-tasking, time management, planning and executing to a defined schedule.
