Sys/Test Validation Engineer 2

Advanced Micro Devices, IncAustin, TX

About The Position

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond. Together, we advance your career. THE ROLE: AMD’s Firmware QA team is seeking an energetic, early career Software Development Engineer (2 years’ experience) to help scale our test automation efforts. You will focus on automating test cases and building reliable test harnesses that accelerate firmware and platform validation across pre-silicon simulation models and post-silicon platforms. This role emphasizes creative automation: finding new ways to reduce manual effort, improve test coverage, and accelerate delivery using modern tooling — including AI assisted techniques and automation frameworks. THE PERSON: You are an inventive, results-oriented engineer who enjoys automating repetitive work and improving test reliability. You challenge the status quo, propose better ways to test and deliver, and enjoy applying new techniques (including AI/ML tools) to boost productivity. You communicate clearly with engineers across firmware, hardware and software domains, take ownership of test assets, and move quickly from prototype automation to production quality CI integration.

Requirements

  • ~2 years of professional experience in test automation, software development, or firmware validation.
  • Strong Python skills and hands-on experience developing automated test cases and scripts in production or lab environments.
  • Familiarity with Windows and Linux testing contexts and common tooling.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins or similar) and test job lifecycle.
  • Practical debugging skills: collecting logs, interpreting kernel/firmware messages, and producing useful triage artifacts.
  • Comfortable experimenting with automation-boosting tools and techniques (e.g., AI-assisted test generation, log parsing/analysis, or automation orchestration).
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Good knowledge of computer architecture and platform components (x86 processors/APU/GPU, PCIe, CXL, USB, NVMe) is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • With a primary focus on automation, create, execute and maintain detailed test procedures and test scripts for BIOS/IFWI and platform firmware using Python and other scripting tools.
  • Scope, design and implement automation that runs across simulation environments and hardware platforms.
  • Integrate test cases into Jenkins (or equivalent CI) pipelines and maintain CI jobs, reporting, and artifact collection.
  • Use and extend internal hardware test tools and third-party utilities; capture failures, collect artifacts (logs, register dumps, AHDS captures), and report defects to firmware and system teams.
  • Apply innovative automation approaches (including AI assisted test generation, test triage heuristics, or automated log parsing) to reduce manual effort and increase throughput.
  • Collaborate with firmware developers, validation engineers, and simulation/modeling teams to reproduce issues in simulation (e.g., Simics like environments) and hardware.
  • Help maintain and grow test frameworks, libraries and reusable test assets, so new tests are easy to author and run.
  • Troubleshoot and debug test failures; contribute clear triage artifacts and constantly improve logging and debugging capabilities in our currently automated tests.
