RISE Academy is an alternative high school within Lawrence Public Schools. RISE is a trauma-informed school, grounded in restorative justice, that values relationships and mutual respect with the belief that all students want to be successful in school. RISE students learn in a competency-based structure in an academic and social-emotional program that works to prepare students for an ever-changing world after high school. We are seeking a high school special education teacher to do the following: Current vision is for this position to have a math focus which would be executed as a.

  • Implement a safe, purposeful classroom environment that prioritizes learning for all students.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, instructional leaders, and partners to ensure instruction is meeting the needs of all students.
  • Assess students regularly, analyze data, and determine appropriate next steps for instruction.
  • Build relationships and communicate regularly with students and their families to solicit input and share academic progress.
  • Participate in and learn from regular professional development opportunities before and during the school year.
  • Support teachers by providing accommodation and/or modification to the curriculum for students eligible for special education through inclusion support.
  • Work to ensure the rights of students with disabilities to be full participants in the general curriculum.
  • Implement state and federal laws and regulations as they apply to special education.
  • Participate in the development of and oversees implementation of IEPs for students eligible for special education.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Implement common assessments that measure progress towards academic standards.
  • Use data from formative and summative assessments to inform instruction.
  • Meet weekly with instructional team.
  • Participate in instructional coaching sessions to improve instructional practices.
  • Maintain strong classroom management and hold students accountable for upholding school rules, student-developed norms, and classroom expectations.
  • Serve as a member of advisory team to a group of 12 to 15 multi-age students who you meet with daily and to whom you provide support.
  • Develop a sense of community within the advisory group and implement any advisory curriculum.
  • Mentor and support these students' development of academic, social, health, and parenting skills to ensure they stay on track to graduation.
  • Provide education and coaching for students around goal setting and development of non-cognitive skills such as perseverance, courage, and more.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Appropriate content/program area educator license (Moderate Disabilities) and grade level licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education preferred.
  • SEI Endorsement required.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners in urban public-school settings strongly preferred.
  • Experience teaching special education at the middle or high school level preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
