The Switch Technician is responsible for coordinating activities of the switch-engine crew within the yard, railroad, industrial plant, or similar location. This role involves coordinating activities of workers engaged in railroad traffic operations, such as the makeup or breakup of trains, yard switching, and reviewing train schedules and switching orders. The technician must interpret train orders, electronic or manual signals, and railroad rules and regulations while following all company guidelines and safety rules when performing their duties.

  • Conducts the inspection of couplings, air hoses, handbrakes, and mechanical equipment to ensure efficient and safe train operation.
  • Directs and instructs workers engaged in yard activities, such as switching tracks, coupling, and uncoupling cars, and routing inbound and outbound traffic.
  • Moves cars to fit planned train configurations, combining or separating cars to make up or break up trains.
  • Documents and prepares reports of accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
  • Inspects each car periodically during runs.
  • Observes yard traffic to determine tracks available to accommodate inbound and outbound traffic.
  • Instructs workers to set warning signals in front and at rear of trains during emergency stops.
  • Inspects freight cars for compliance with sealing procedures, and records car numbers and seal numbers.
  • Maintains a clean workspace.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the Repair Manager, Repair Supervisor or Team Leader.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read and comprehend work orders.
  • Dependable and meets standards of punctuality and attendance.
  • Mechanically inclined and willingness to learn different tasks.
  • Complies with all safety rules and procedures.
