ORGANIZATIONAL IMPERATIVE: The Switching Supervisor is required to perform supervisory and other management responsibilities while also performing yard management services in accordance with the best standards of the transportation industry and in compliance with FHI policies and procedures SUCCESS FACTORS: We will know the Switching Supervisor is successful when: There is year-over-year improvement in retention and turnover There is year-over-year improvement in DART rating Financial targets as determined by company leadership are met or exceeded There is year-over-year sustained or improved WC costs There is year-over-year sustained or improved direct wage cost BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to commit to requests for assistance and follow through to make sure that they are complete and escalate, as necessary Ability to effectively organize, prioritize, and time manage workload Ability to hold self and other accountable for high-quality, timely, and effective results Ability to mentor and assist direct reports to help achieve personal and professional goals by providing opportunities to learn new skills

Requirements

  • Experience working with switching equipment and backing trailers
  • Experience with leading a team to drive results
  • Experience with performing the functions of the job for Spotter/Yard Switcher position in a distribution setting
  • Experience performing safety checks and preventative maintenance inspections of switching equipment
  • Knowledge of Spotter/Yard Switcher position, preferred
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
  • Must possess a current driver’s license
  • Safe driving record

Responsibilities

  • Directs associate to perform operations safely and efficiently
  • Utilizes daily huddles with associates to ensure operating procedures
  • Communicates with associates, host management, transportation partners, and FHI Leadership to ensure performance standards and goals are accomplished
  • Provides recommendations for hiring, promotions, and terminations of associates
  • Makes recommendations and implements changes for performance improvement
  • Maintains safety mindset through daily safety inspections, adherence to safety policies, EHS Safety Audits, reporting potential safety threats; works with leadership to remedy threatening situations
  • Mentors and trains new associates
  • Complies with and enforces time keeping policies and procedures.
  • Conducts timekeeping audits and approves time
  • Moves trailers on property as directed by customer or systems
  • Verifies seals and performs load status yard checks, as required by facility
  • Performs trailer safety checks including, but not limited to, sliding tandem axels, if required
  • Red tags trailers if needed
  • Obeys applicable traffic laws while conducting operations on behalf of the customer
  • Obeys facility traffic and safety rules, as required
  • Complies with appropriate training records and sign off procedures
  • Participates in continuous improvement processes
  • Maintains an effective Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) schedule for equipment
