About The Position

The Switchboard (PBX) Operator provides outstanding service to all customers while conducting telecommunications routing incoming and outgoing calls through the use of telephones, pagers, or computer to connect communication between visitors, callers, staff, patients, and patient's families. Initiates appropriate response personnel for various emergency and disaster situations. Problem solves pager issues for Physician staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent is required.
  • Computer knowledge and good typing skills (30-40 wpm) required.
  • Ability to work days/evenings.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Great customer service skills.
  • Team player in a high call volume environment.

Responsibilities

  • Quickly and professionally answering and processing all calls.
  • Listening to callers, clarifying requests, then carefully and accurately dialing numbers.
  • Accurately assisting and/or placing local or long distance calls for patients, visitors, staff and physicians.
  • Locating Physicians as well as ON CALL STAFF as requested by other physicians or departments within the Hospital as policy directs.
  • Taking careful notes, logging and timing all requests, and logging all attempts as well as methods used.
  • Following through on STAT'S and verifying information used is current.
  • Keeping co-workers informed of status for efficiency.
  • Maintaining current information regarding Physicians or On Call Staff's availability.
  • Writing short term or temporary information on notes, dated and shared with ALL CO-WORKERS.
  • Writing long term or permanent information or changes on notes, dated, and posted accordingly.
  • Using steno pad for ALL note taking while on duty.
  • Maintaining daily call schedules for all 'On Call' Departments or Physicians and/or their group coverage.
  • Updating all call schedules and support documents carefully, correctly, and neatly.
  • Sharing all changes and updates with coworkers in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assisting employees or Physicians with basic Beeper services, such as batteries.
  • Documenting and signing out a loaner beeper after hours.
  • Leaving a written note of pending beeper needs for Lead Operator or Supervisor.
  • Arranging repair or replacement of any telephone or telephone equipment.
  • Referring to the Telecommunication Manager or after hours reaching the person 'on call' for Communications.
  • Reporting and initiating repairs if the on-call person is unavailable.
  • Writing a brief but complete description of any incident or unusual occurrence while on duty.
