About The Position

Under the supervision of the shipping supervisor operates the locomotives to position rail cars for loading, weighing and storage. Perform the general maintenance on the 65- and 100-ton locomotives including maintaining locomotive oil levels. Unload cement from railcars, store and then load it into trucks for distribution.

Requirements

  • One to two years knowledge of plant, one year in department.
  • Thorough knowledge of silo configuration and cement storage.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Basic knowledge of railroad safety procedures and signals.
  • Knowledge of railroad track layout and switching procedures.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Basic mechanical ability to perform service and maintenance on locomotives.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision.
  • Safety oriented.
  • Individual needs strong upper body strength for hanging/pulling self up on side of rail cars; position requires excessive ability to move about, ascend/descend ladder to locomotive, position self to clean and maintain switches, track and rail cars and perform service and maintenance on switch engine; moves equipment, material weighing up to 50 pounds in maintenance and clean-up duties; operates levers requiring high degree of manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination in switching and spotting rail cars for loading, weighing, shipping and storage; frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates locomotive in safe and efficient manner.
  • Positions rail cars use locomotives for loading, cleaning, weighing and train make up.
  • Follows loading and positioning directions of the switch operator.
  • Monitors functions of locomotive and perform regular service and maintenance.
  • Switch and spot railroad cars for loading, weighing, shipping and storage.
  • Provide shipping clerk with car numbers for tagging purposes.
  • Clean and maintain switches and track.
  • Insure car doors are properly cleaned and closed before loading.
  • Keep the car door closing and storage shed clean and organized.
  • Documents and records preventive maintenance performed on locomotive.
  • Will maintain a safe working environment, adhere to safety policies and practices, perform daily housekeeping of assigned areas, perform daily workplace inspections, adhere to plant policies and proper use of plant radios.
  • Be familiar with MSHA safety rules, safety procedures for plant mobile equipment, lockout/tagout policy, confined space permit policy, hot work policy, emergency response plan, arc flash/shock and burn protection, proper containment, and disposal process (via Waste Management Plan) for lubricants, paints/solvents and other environmentally sensitive materials.
  • Ensure quality of work performed, participate in continuous improvement system, observe and promote best practices, good time management and be able to troubleshoot/analyze root cause failure.
  • Will work where and when needed as directed by plant supervisory personnel to meet plant needs.
