About The Position

The position involves operating a variety of refuse collection vehicles on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, commercial cans, or recycling. The driver is responsible for ensuring that garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly, which may require using back doors. The role includes providing a high level of customer service, performing daily inspections of the vehicle, maintaining cleanliness, and preparing required reports. The work is performed under supervision, with performance reviewed through direct observation and discussion of any issues.

Requirements

• Must have a Class A or B CDL valid for the state of employment.
• Requires a safe driving record.
• Requires 2 years of waste industry driving experience within the past 7 years.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Understanding of refuse collection policies and Department of Transportation requirements.
• Ability to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
• Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction.
• Exhibit normal range of body motion.
• Ability to drive various types of refuse trucks.
• Ability to manipulate heavy equipment control levers.
• Ability to follow a designated refuse collection route.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain written records and service responses.
• Must be able to speak and read English well enough to communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Safely drives truck on pre-established route in accordance with Decision Driving principles.
• Collects and dumps garbage and refuse into refuse trucks while covering a designated route.
• Unloads refuse trucks at the landfill, transfer station, or similar facility.
• Operates compaction and lift equipment on various types of refuse trucks.
• Provides courteous and expeditious customer service in all aspects of refuse operation.
• Ensures proper pick up and transfer of garbage and recyclables.
• Tags improper refuse containers and waste.
• Answers questions for residents and directs them to appropriate contacts.
• Performs daily pre and post trip inspections as per Waste Pro procedures.
• Maintains clean truck and washes exterior weekly.
• Performs manual duties in the clean-up of scattered refuse.
• Prepares, maintains, and submits required reports and documents.
• Assists other routes for completion and attends community events as needed.
• Responsible for all persons working on the vehicle during the designated route.
• Complies with all Department of Transportation and State requirements.
• May be required to work during emergency situations.
