Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, Swimming Instructors at the Tukwila Pool are responsible for providing instruction on swimming techniques and water safety to patrons. This role is essential in preventing accidents and ensuring a safe environment for all pool users. Instructors must be at least 16 years of age and hold a valid First Aid/CPR and Water Safety Instructor certificate, which may be obtained during the training period. The position requires strong swimming abilities and the capacity to work well with children, as well as the ability to pass an FBI and Washington State Patrol background check. The primary duty of a Swimming Instructor is to deliver quality swimming instruction and water safety training. Instructors are tasked with minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations, responding quickly to emergencies, administering first aid/CPR as needed, and communicating effectively with other staff regarding the need for additional assistance or equipment. Instructors must be punctual, ready to start work with all necessary equipment set up, and in uniform at the beginning of their shifts. They are expected to know, enforce, and adhere to all facility rules and regulations, maintaining constant vigilance over students to ensure their safety. In addition to teaching, Swimming Instructors are responsible for cleaning designated areas of the facility, assisting with equipment setup and cleanup for classes and activities, and acting as customer service representatives at the front desk when needed. They must maintain regular attendance and participate in monthly in-service trainings to meet all training requirements. The role also involves interacting with pool patrons, including parents, in a respectful and pleasant manner. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Candidates for the Swimming Instructor position will undergo a training program to learn how to provide quality swimming instruction and water safety training. This training may take several weeks, during which candidates will be paid and certified in First Aid/CPR. They may also have the opportunity to earn an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate. Upon successful completion of the training, candidates may be offered a staff position as a Swimming Instructor.
