About The Position

The role of the Swim Team Head Coach is to provide motivation, instruction and a safe environment to all participants of the competitive team. This position will provide direct leadership to the team and attend all practices, meets and functions throughout the team session. Maintain safe swimming conditions and maintain constant communication with Director of Operations. The coaching staff is responsible for the administration of the practice plan, attending and organizing meets and effectively communicating with team parents, participants and volunteers. Practices are held weekly Monday-Friday 8:00am-10:00am for the duration of the season; must be available for evening and weekend meets as required.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Experience in competitive sport being hired to coach.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a coach in the designated sport is required for the Team Coach.
  • Understanding of YMCA standards for the program.
  • Completion of YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Harassment Trainings upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Maintain First Aid, CPR Certifications.
  • Swim Team Coaches must hold and maintain Lifeguarding Certification.
  • Swim Team Coaches must complete YMCA principles of Competitive Swimming.
  • Swim Team Coaches must complete Red Cross Safety for Swim Coaches within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds associated with demonstrating and moving training equipment.
  • Ability to adequately provide instruction and supervision for the designated program.
  • Above average sport specific skills.
  • Neat and clean appearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Meet or Team Manager is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a structured training program that promotes skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide hands-on coaching, including technique instruction, conditioning, and race strategy.
  • Lead and mentor assistant coaches, ensuring consistency in coaching philosophy and team goals.
  • Plan and oversee swim team practices, meets, and other team-related events.
  • Ensure all swim team members and coaching staff adhere to YMCA policies and safety procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, and YMCA leadership regarding team updates, meet schedules, and expectations.
  • Track swimmer progress, provide feedback, and develop individualized goals for athletes.
  • Coordinate team participation in local and regional swim meets, including meet entries and logistics.
  • Foster an inclusive and welcoming team environment that aligns with the YMCA’s mission and values.
  • Maintain compliance with all YMCA and USA Swimming guidelines, including safety certifications and background checks.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with Aquatics Director.
