About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction and supervision of the Youth Sports Supervisor, the Swim Team Coach is responsible for contributing to the development of children into efficient swimmers and being actively involved with swim teams. The Swim Team Coach is also responsible for helping to provide a healthy and safe swimming environment for all.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Previous experience and knowledge of Swim Teams required
  • Required current certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid. Oxygen certification required (within first 90 days)
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving required (within first 90 days)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills including working with diverse groups and ages of people and cultures from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Working knowledge of modern aquatic facility procedures, practices, and equipment preferred
  • Knowledge of current competitive swimming training techniques and the ability to teach all four strokes preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred but not required a nationally recognized Swim Coach certification and Lifeguard Certification

Responsibilities

  • Leads and Coaches practices, implements planned workouts and goals for each practice, and supports any other training program that is tailored to the variable skills and abilities of the swimmers. Ensures that practices have positive feedback, creativity, and fun.
  • Attends and coaches at meets as directed and assigned by Supervisor.
  • Be on deck before swimmers enter the water and throughout the entire practice.
  • Helps to create and maintains a positive and supportive team environment where all athletes grow and develop into healthy young adults.
  • Ensures that the pool area after practice and swim meets is left as directed and all equipment is maintained in good condition and stored properly. Perform/communicate equipment repairs regularly for safety and function.
  • Track all necessary supplies such as medals and ribbons and any other supplies that would be needed as directed by Supervisor.
  • Establishes and maintains a respectful and effective working relationship with all stakeholders to include, but not limited to, swimmers, coaches, YMCA staff and members, and the parents.
  • Reports immediately all concerns and/or grievances presented to them by any party to Supervisor and/or Sr. Director of Administration/Operations.
  • Completes accurate incident reports concerning injuries, discipline, or any other event/incident involving YMCA swimmers to be turned into the Head Swim Team Coach prior to end of shift.
  • Ensures the rules for the pool deck and Aquatics Department are followed and enforces the rules when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
