Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for teaching children according to the District Swim program. Duties and Responsibilities Be familiar with the aquatic and safety skills in the RTPD Swim Lesson Programs. Maintain and develop a thorough understanding of the Park District’s policies and operations and enforce them in a positive manner. Be able to teach, demonstrate, and correct skills at all levels of the program offered by the district. Be able to organize a class, keep attendance and cover all material required. Be able to use corrective feedback in evaluating student’s progress and correcting problems. Be prepared to issue certificates or progress reports to each student at course completion. Progress cards and data must be completed for the Park District. Maintain safe and clean atmosphere for everyone. Equipment must be taken care of and put back neatly for storage. Perform any other duties as assigned. Maintain a watchful eye on the class at all times until the participants have left the water after class is dismissed. Be responsible for the safety and instruction of all students in and around the pool area. Be in the water at all times with the lower levels and as often as possible with the upper levels. Consistently enforce all rules for the facility. Develop a thorough understanding of the Park District’s policies and operations and enforce them in a positive manner. Must co-teach until proven responsible and competent enough to teach alone as determined by Swim Lesson Coordinator. BEFORE CLASS Be on deck and prepared for class before class begins. (This includes having all teaching tools ready and all paper work filled out.) Follow lesson plans appropriate to the day of the lesson. DURING CLASS Teach all class material in an effective manner, adapting teaching styles to fit the needs of the class (not the needs of the instructor). Continuously evaluate class members during each lesson in order to avoid a “Testing Day” at the end of the session. Record skill accomplishments either on the progress records or the class rosters. Watch your class at all times. Do not leave the class participants unattended at any time. Never turn your back on any of the students. AFTER CLASS Be available and approachable for parents to discuss questions or concerns. Be sure to clean up all equipment used during the lesson. This includes helping other instructors put away their equipment. OUTSIDE OF CLASS Completely fill out progress reports (when appropriate) using the comment section for a professional, constructive personal note about the class participant. Find a suitable sub when an absence is necessary. Risk Management Actively supports and enforces the safety program instituted by the Park District Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and department-specific safety rules Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings as directed Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to your director supervisor Enforces safety disciplinary policies and procedures Uses protective gloves, masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to pathogens Obey the practical safety rules, regulations and procedures established by the safety program.
