About The Position

GENERAL PURPOSE: Provide safe and quality swim lesson instruction for various age groups and abilities. Wheat Ridge was founded during the 1859 Gold Rush as a rest stop for miners and later named for its golden wheat fields. As unsuccessful miners turned to farming, the area thrived with orchards, vegetable fields, and later, greenhouses, earning the title “Carnation City.” Incorporated in 1969, Wheat Ridge now offers a central location with easy access to Denver and the Rocky Mountains. It operates as a home-rule city with a council-manager government, where the elected council sets policy, and the manager oversees daily operations and budgeting. Requirements

  • Swim Instructor candidates must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Able to proficiently perform various swim strokes for 25 yards.
  • Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) Swim Lesson Instructor certification (preferred) or other nationally accredited certification required.
  • SAI certification provided for selected candidates.
  • Instruct large groups of people, follow instructions, communicate effectively to the participants when teaching, analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper courses of action to be taken.
  • Analyze and correct facility safety hazards, write reports as necessary, learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships while working with a high level of autonomy.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental rules and regulations paired with considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, teaching methods and techniques that provide positive motivation in recreational environment.
  • Working knowledge of rules, strategies, and skills and organizational procedures associated with working with within a professional setting and aquatics department.
  • General knowledge of human anatomy.
  • Previous instructional experience preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach class content appropriate to the course description, level and within certification guidelines.
  • Monitor participants and assess their skills.
  • Provide a safe environment for all participants.
  • Complete any necessary reports and forms, i.e., course records, attendance. records, progress reports, lesson plans, etc.
  • Responsible for finding a dependable, appropriate substitute upon their absence.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.
