About The Position

Under the supervision of the Area Supervisor, the Swim Instructor at YMCA of Central MA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes. This is a summer seasonal position with a start date of June 15th going through August 23rd. Shifts will be between the hours of 9:30am to 7:00pm Sunday-Saturday. Requirements

  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification, WSI or equivalent.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certifications required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • At least 16 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using the prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports) and communicates with participants and parents regarding progress.
  • Dress appropriately; one-piece suit trunks and/or instructor staff shirt.
  • Always be ready to enter the water, regardless of swim level.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures and assists lifeguards if needed. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Address any behavioral issues calmly and respectfully. If inappropriate behavior continues, consult your supervisor.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • Willing to teach at any of the 4 locations.(Shore, Coes, Bell and Crompton).
