About The Position

The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is a leading non-profit organization focused on education, wellness, youth development, and community-building. It serves over 3,000 children in high-quality literacy and STEAM-infused learning, provides 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatics, camps, and leadership programs, and offers programs and facilities to over 200,000 members for connection and wellness. The organization also engages over 25,000 volunteers and donors. The Swim Instructor position supports the Y's mission by strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The instructor is responsible for maintaining a supportive, positive atmosphere and providing direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes, welcoming and respecting all individuals.

Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required
  • Intro to the Y’s Cause and Culture, Living our Cause & I Hear you. Service with Care e-learning within first 30 days
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check including Criminal Record check, Drug Screening, motor vehicle record (MVR) and reference check according to company policy.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the US without current or future sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Maintain records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organize and put away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
