About The Position

Reporting directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Albany Med Health System, the Chief of Staff (CoS) is a senior executive leader who serves as a trusted advisor, enterprise integrator, and execution partner to the CEO across the full AMHS enterprise. The Chief of Staff plays a pivotal role in advancing AMHS’s mission as the region’s only academic health system—integrating clinical care delivery, physician enterprise operations, academic medicine, research, and education—while supporting the CEO in leading a complex, multi-entity organization with diverse stakeholders and governance structures. Operating with broad enterprise visibility and influence, the CoS ensures alignment, disciplined execution, and follow-through on the CEO’s strategic priorities. The role has no direct line authority but exercises significant influence across hospitals, the medical college, faculty practice plans, and corporate functions. The Chief of Staff may represent the CEO as a designee and is expected to lead high-impact initiatives central to system transformation, physician alignment, academic integration, and performance improvement.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or terminal degree required; preferred fields include healthcare administration, business administration, public health, medicine, nursing, or related disciplines.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in an academic health system, large integrated delivery system, faculty practice plan, or top-tier healthcare consulting environment.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex, cross-functional initiatives in matrixed organizations.
  • Academic Health System Acumen: Deep understanding of the clinical–academic interface, physician enterprise dynamics, and faculty governance.
  • Executive Presence & Judgment: Credibility with CEOs, boards, physicians, faculty, and senior administrators.
  • Influence Without Authority: Proven ability to align diverse stakeholders and drive execution without direct control.
  • Strategic-to-Operational Translation: Ability to move seamlessly from enterprise strategy to disciplined execution.
  • Analytical & Communication Excellence: Strong quantitative skills and ability to synthesize complex issues into clear, executive-ready insights.
  • Integrity & Discretion: High ethical standards and sound judgment in managing confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and resilient in fast-paced, high-stakes academic health system environments.
