WATG is a global, employee-owned destination and hospitality design firm with over 500 professionals across various offices. The firm's design approach integrates a hospitality ethos into all projects, from feasibility studies to final touches, operating as a multidisciplinary practice. Specializing in hospitality, gaming + entertainment, urban + mixed-use, and high-end residential design, WATG was founded in Honolulu in 1945, maintaining a strong focus on community strength, self-reliance, and sustainability. The company is committed to designing spaces that respect, protect, and enhance their natural surroundings while delivering long-term value for clients and communities. WATG is seeking a Sustainability Intern for its Los Angeles office. This role requires critical thinking, application of scientific methods, ideation, goal setting, strategy synthesis, and communication of solutions to achieve positive environmental impact. The Sustainability Intern will demonstrate knowledge of passive and active design strategies, mechanical systems, climate, and materiality.
Requirements
- Degree in Architecture, Building Science, or an equivalent field
- Familiarity with decarbonization strategies
- Familiarity with scope emissions inventory
- Ability to gather, analyze, iterate, and interpret information to advance high-performance architecture and sustainable master planning solutions
- Proficiency in ClimateStudio, Forma, Insight, or similar environmental assessment software
- Intermediate proficiency in Rhino, Revit, and AutoCAD
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong graphics composition skills and familiarity with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to compose illustrations for client presentations
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to meet deadlines consistently and effectively
Nice To Haves
- Certificates such as LEED, WELL, or similar preferred
- Intermediate proficiency in Grasshopper or Dynamo scripting is desired
Responsibilities
- Curates high-performance project solutions to help decarbonize the built environment for WATG’s master planning, architecture, interior design, and landscape teams
- Simulates life cycle assessments to forecast carbon debt and establishes reduction measures
- Assists the Director of Sustainability on large projects and global initiatives, such as the firm’s climate action plan
