About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, and another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system. BEDC seeks to hire a Sustainability Graduate Intern for the In-house Design (IHD) directorate located in Queens, NY. Under supervision the selected candidate supports capital projects by assisting on the implementation of sustainability initiatives on capital projects; data compilation and analysis of existing programs, system management and outreach; support of individual project review and compliance task tracking; and conducting regulatory research. This project-specific work provides an intern experience that resembles an entry level sustainability job, preparing the candidate for graduation. In addition, each summer intern develops one special project in an area that is of personal interest and of a research need of the Bureau; these graduate projects are typically more regulatory focused. Past projects included the local law tracking database, regulatory requirements of climate resilience and specification development. In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.
