Position Overview Join us in the summer of 2026 and help us continue the legacy of fostering creativity, nurturing talent, and celebrating the individual artistic journey at Interlochen. We are seeking a collaborative and self-directed Sustainability Ecology Intern who embodies our core values and are committed to nurturing young artists. As a Sustainability Ecology Intern, you will be responsible for supporting the operations of the Interlochen Center for the Arts' Sustainability Department at the RB Annis Botanical Laboratory and Community Garden with a specific focus on projects in the areas of native plants (gardens and nursery), habitat surveys, and botanical laboratory site upkeep. The Sustainability Ecology Intern will work closely with the year-round Sustainability Department staff to ensure successful completion of projects while fully immersing yourself in the unique environment that only a summer camp can offer.. The Sustainability Ecology Intern may also be involved in site tours, educational program support, department events, and general support needs.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the daily chores and operations (feeding animals, cleaning chicken coops, watering etc.) of the RB Annis Botanical Laboratory and community garden.
  • Assist with native plant-related projects such as refurbishing native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, rain gardens, and shoreline restoration. Tasks will include weeding, planting, digging etc.
  • Assist with habitat, trail, and other similar surveys on Interlochen's property. Surveys may be aquatic or terrestrial.
  • Support educational programs on site and may be required to assist various teaching classes, in a support role, as needed.
  • Contribute to many aspects of the Sustainability Department programs (including public tours and projects within the department).
  • Occasionally assist with farm site tasks (trellising, digging, harvesting, weeding, hauling wheelbarrows, etc.) at the Interlochen Sustainability Department farm.
  • Seek the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness; will comply with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances; will respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community; and will prioritize duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.
