About The Position

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Surveyor in the Butte District. Preference is to hire an individual at the Surveyor II or Senior Surveyor level. The journey level position is responsible for performing advanced technical and professional field survey work; serving as party chief for field surveys; reviewing surveys to determine the validity of the evidence and methods used and to ensure accurate survey information; maintaining equipment and inventories; and performing other duties as assigned. The entry level position is responsible for performing a variety of technical and pre-professional survey duties. Examples of duties include\: making measurements, collecting and recording survey data, operating survey equipment, setting stakes/monuments, researching records, recovering survey evidence, making rudimentary survey calculations, drafting at an entry level, maintaining survey equipment and sustaining an inventory of survey supplies. Mostly day travel throughout the Butte District, overnight is rare. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities. Requirements

  • Surveyor I ($25.80) · Typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a related filed from an accredited college or university. Related degrees must include significant coursework in survey related maths, drafting, and surveying techniques, principles and practices.
  • Surveyor II ($30.49) · Typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a related filed from an accredited college or university. Related degrees must include significant coursework in survey related maths, drafting, and surveying techniques, principles and practices · This position requires a minimum of 2 years of survey experience. · Certification as a Land Surveyor Intern, per 37-67-326, MCA.
  • Senior Surveyor ($37.27) · Typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a related filed from an accredited college or university. Related degrees must include significant coursework in survey related maths, drafting, and surveying techniques, principles, and practices. · Two years of progressively responsible professional land survey experience is required. · Registration as a Montana Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) is required.
  • Driver’s record will be verified.
  • Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records.
  • Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference is placed on qualifications for a Surveyor III (PLS) or qualifications for Surveyor II with a Montana Land Surveyor Intern (LSI) certificate; qualifications for Surveyor I may also be considered.
