We are seeking a Surveying Technician to support the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service’s Lands Program in Asheville, NC. As the Surveying Technician, you will support services focusing on disaster recovery project development, including project planning, preliminary survey and information gathering, project scoping, inspection, and associated general surveying duties in support of the disaster recovery efforts of the National Forests in North Carolina Lands program.

  • Plan and conduct cadastral surveying projects of a complex nature, usually involving conflicting title data or fragmentary corner evidence requiring considerable research and evaluation.
  • Assemble all survey project data and perform the necessary mathematical computations involved in traverse closure, azimuth determination, state plane coordinate transformation, section subdivision, route alignment, and location.
  • Prepare preliminary and final survey plats, drawings, reports, legal records, and title descriptions for review and approval by a registered land surveyor.
  • Serve as a contract inspector ensuring compliance with contract specifications on survey projects contracted with private surveying firms.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to Forest survey personnel performing cadastral, geodetic, rights-of-way, and engineering surveys.
  • Travel to project locations for contract inspections as well as pre-design scoping activities and surveys.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently without sponsorship.
  • A High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of (3) years of experience scoping, planning, and designing complete land surveying projects of moderate complexity.
  • A minimum of (3) years of experience preparing cost estimates and writing special project specifications for land surveying projects.
  • Professional knowledge of established surveying concepts, principles and conventional land surveying methodology.
  • Working knowledge of pertinent federal and state land laws and comprehensive knowledge of applicable policy and standards.
  • Functional understanding of land surveying techniques and their applications.
  • Skill in the operation, calibration, and adjustment of precision surveying instruments.
  • Skill in written and oral communication necessary for preparation of correspondence, project reports, and presentation of formal and informal instruction.
  • Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD and ESRI GIS software a plus.
  • Ability to travel for extended periods, on foot, over steep, mountainous terrain and forested areas.
  • The ability to lift and carry up to 50 Lbs. for extended periods.
