The company is currently seeking a Survey Tech I for their New Albany office. In this role, the Survey Technician I will work as part of a two- or three-person field crew performing land surveying measurements in support of topographic mapping, boundary surveys, and construction layout. This position primarily serves as an assistant to the Survey Crew Leader while gaining hands-on experience with surveying equipment, data collection, and field operations. Additionally, this role will assist the Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Dept. with utility investigations and field work including the identification, designation and mapping of underground utilities, using electromagnetic detection equipment, ground penetrating radar (GPR), non-invasive excavation equipment and other technologies. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, and survey plans.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations using a calculator or handheld data collector.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer use.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50–70 pounds of equipment to and from job sites.
  • Ability to work in varied weather conditions including heat, humidity, and cold temperatures.
  • Willingness to travel or work out of town for project assignments when needed.
  • Ability to work 40+ hours per week depending on project demands.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of surveying experience or comparable education preferred.
  • Basic understanding of surveying principles and field operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist survey crews in performing field measurements for topographic surveys, boundary surveys, and construction layout.
  • Participate in daily briefings regarding project requirements, safety procedures, and progress updates.
  • Assist the crew leader in collecting and managing field data.
  • Monitor field activities and communicate observations or issues to the crew leader.
  • Load and unload vehicles with survey equipment and tools required for daily field activities.
  • Learn the operation of surveying equipment including GPS, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Maintain and care for survey equipment and ensure proper storage and handling.
  • Charge equipment and monitor daily field supplies, restocking vehicles as needed.
  • Conduct utility research, reviewing as-built drawings, utility maps, and other reference materials.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, utility maps, and as-builts.
  • Collaborate with engineers, utility contacts, and project managers to verify and interpret utility data, ensuring clear communication and safety.
  • Complete required safety training and perform work in accordance with company safety procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings and follow safe work practices while working in the field.
