About The Position

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a Survey Programmer II to join our IT Data and Intelligence Systems Department and take a role in the technical design and programming of NORC questionnaires. The Survey Programmer II will also be involved in code reviews, walk-throughs, and work on cross-functional teams. This role will be dedicated to working on NORC's client projects. The successful candidate can work at NORC’s headquarters, one of our regional offices, fully remote, or flexibly hybrid. NORC's Information Technology program provides technology services to our staff and clients. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience required
  • At least four (4) years of experience in all phases of survey questionnaire development and/or programming with CATI/CAPI/CAWI programming survey engines such as Unicom Intelligence (formerly IBM SPSS Dimensions/MR Interview), Voxco, Confirmit/Forsta Plus, Decipher or Blaise
  • For candidates with additional experience there will be opportunity for promotion to Senior Survey Programmer.
  • Experience with SDLC, including requirements, design, implementation, build and release, and production support
  • Familiarity with social science research or survey methodology and/or market research
  • Understanding of key business functions in survey data collection, including sample management and telephone scheduling concepts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong math, logic, and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS & JavaScript

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of other programming languages, such as PowerShell, VBScript, Python, or C#
  • Practical use of Git for source control and Jira for issues tracking
  • Experience with automation tools, such as Rundeck, Jenkins, or other schedulers
  • Familiarity with SAS, SPSS, or other dataset management platforms
  • Occasional travel for department meetings may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and test survey solutions to project specifications
  • Script surveys on one of our four platforms depending on data collection mode and project needs
  • Conduct design walk-throughs and code reviews
  • Contribute to and maintain process improvements
  • Work on cross-functional project teams
