About The Position

The Survey Crew Chief position in the City of Tucson’s Water Department is primarily responsible for leading a field survey team, overseeing all aspects of surveying projects including data collection, equipment operation, quality control, safety procedures, and ensuring accurate field measurements are taken according to project specifications, while adhering to established surveying standards and regulations. This often involves tasks like establishing control points, performing topographic surveys, property boundary surveys, construction staking, and documenting all field observations thoroughly. The Survey Crew Chief will utilize CADD, survey software (data collector) and/or handheld calculators to calculate and review survey plans and projects. Work is performed under the supervision of the Land Surveyor. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Education: 6 months post high school
  • Experience: Two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Driving Requirement: Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver’s License
  • Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in the use of Carlson Survey or equivalent survey software.
  • Prior experience as an instrument operator on a survey crew.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and guides survey crew members and assigns tasks.
  • Organizes and logs daily activities of crew researching legal and survey documents.
  • Ensures quality and integrity of calculated data and data collected in the field.
  • Maintains survey instruments and equipment in working order and condition.
  • Trains staff in departmental methods, procedures, and goals.
  • Maintains effective communication with engineering staff, supervisors, inspectors, outside contractors and the general public.
  • Encourages professional growth, morale and motivation in the crew.
  • Ensures crews works efficiently while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
