About The Position

The Surveying and Mapping Division, a division of Land Management Services Department, provides project and geodetic surveying services to various County programs and departments. Project surveying includes boundary surveys, topographical surveys, right-of-way surveys, as-built surveys, construction stake-out, and sketches and descriptions of County owned property. We also assist with asset management programs for our Public Works Department using some of the latest GIS based applications for data collection and database updates. We currently have two three person survey field crews that work Monday thru Thursday 6:30 am to 5:00 pm. The Survey Division has maintained two field crews for many years by increasing efficiency with technology. Each survey field crew consists of a Survey Party Chief, Instrument Technician and a Survey Assistant and we pride ourselves on safety, accuracy and camaraderie among our employees. Our survey crews function as a team and are trained to be highly professional in their duties as we interact with the public daily.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one (1) to two (2) years.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
  • Knowledge of field survey instrument operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of land surveying principles, practices, techniques, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Measures and marks horizontal and vertical distances; clears brush; located property markers; marks and drives stakes.
  • Loads and unloads equipment into survey party vehicle; ensures vehicle is properly stocked with equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains equipment, vehicles and equipment as assigned.
  • Performs the duties of the Instrument Technician in his or her absence.
  • Flags traffic.
  • Maintains a full-time presence on the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
