About The Position

The Engineering Technician 3 position serves as the Survey Crew Chief within the Multnomah County Survey Section. This role is responsible for leading a land survey crew in government corner restoration and maintenance, conducting field inspections, and performing survey work on county roads and bridges. The position requires accurate field note-taking, preliminary survey work for construction, and effective communication with engineers and contractors. The Survey Crew Chief will oversee a small team and ensure the safety and efficiency of survey operations.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to an associate's degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering or surveying technology, construction management, or a related field.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in land surveying, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead crew member of the land survey crew for government corner restoration and maintenance.
  • Keep accurate field notes.
  • Perform preliminary survey work for construction such as topographical surveys.
  • Locate and maintain public land corner monuments and references by taking precise measurements and compiling detailed notes.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and calculate grades for roadbeds, storm and sanitary sewer lines, and related utilities.
  • Oversee and direct the work of 1-3 personnel.
  • Communicate with engineers, other surveyors, construction contractors, and the public.
  • Operate total station, GPS receivers, and data collectors.
  • Drive stakes, iron pipes, and iron rods; chop heavy brush; dig asphalt; and hike in steep wooded terrain.
  • Create safe traffic control plans for working in the right of way.
  • Drive and maintain survey vehicle, often driving up to 80+ miles per day.
